I was already familiar with Christian Liberty Press thanks to their Nature Readers which the kids and I love. So I was delighted when I received another book of theirs to review. Mr. Pipes and the British Hymn Makers by Douglas Bond is a delightful book. First of all, as a little girl I was raised in England, so reading this book is like going back to my roots. I love the wording English authors use.
The story follows two American teens vacationing in England who meet an elderly Englishmen called Mr. Pipes. As they get to know him, they learn about famous British hymn writers, and why traditional praise and worship is valuable.
Now, when I first met the teen boy, I didn’t like is attitude. My kids (teens included) would be ecstatic to visit a small English town. However, we learn why he’s a bit rough around the edges, and by the end, he has a heart change.
Mr. Pipes and the British Hymn Makers is great to use as a read aloud or simply let your kids enjoy it on their own. I had both of my teens read the book on their own, and let them tell me about it as they went along. It’s fun to not only share this wonderful story, but also to talk about the British words I used as a child. So they get a little hymn maker history along with mama history. Both teens think the book is cute, and would like to read the other books in the series.
Mr. Pipes and the British Hymn Makers costs $8.79 for the PDF version, which is what I received for reviewing, and the print version is available for $9.89. The other books in the series run about the same price, and you can buy the complete set for $38.99. The suggested grade level is 7th – 10th. I think the book could be used as a read aloud for some younger than the recommended age, and as an adult, I enjoyed the book, too.
