A while ago, I wrote a post called Two Must Have Anti-Spam WordPress Plugins. As with much of technology, things have changed, and these two plugins weren’t cutting it anymore. Akismet still caught a ton of spam, but it also caught several good comments. I’d have to wade through a lot of spam to find them, too. Not my idea of fun. Plus, it took time from more important things. Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam simply quit working.
So I went on the hunt again. I wanted a solution that took the work away from me, and put it squarely on the plugins. I also wanted to make commenting as easy for my readers as possible.
With Anti-Spam, the reader doesn’t have to deal with captcha, and the blogger doesn’t have a huge spam queue to moderate. You install the plugin and forget about it. Simple.
The Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin adds an extra layer of security for me by adding a checkbox for the reader to check proving they aren’t a spammer. Spam bots can’t see it, so their comments never come through. By the way, you won’t see the checkbox if you are logged in.
With these two plugins, I rarely have a suspicious comment to deal with, and I don’t have to worry about losing good comments to a long spam queue because there isn’t one.
One thing to note, I recently did an overhaul on my site to make it load quickly, and these two plugins are lightweight. They don’t weigh down your load speed at all. So if spam is a problem, give these a try.
